Dormant Mind

Romina Cosentino

A high-contrast, black and white close-up portrait of a person's face, heavily cropped, with visible dark eyes and thick eyebrows. The left side of the face is in shadow, revealing one eye, the nose bridge, and part of the other eye, while the right side is brightly lit to the point of being overexposed white. Dark hair frames the face on both sides, and the image has a pronounced grainy texture.

Dormant Mind is a photographic series that explores the tension between creative inspiration and exhaustion through the mind and body of an artist. The mind begins to fall into dormancy when faced with creative burn out, as the mind scatters for new ideas while the body begins to shut down. Through self-portraiture the body and mind become both a subject and site of quiet stillness and chaotic desperation. Disoriented views of the human body are presented through overexposure and motion while being devoid of colour, that dives into the dormant mindscape. This series frames the experience of burn out not as failure, but instead a necessary process to work through and overcome.
