Through My Mother’s Eyes

An open, ring-bound photo album with a light green spine sits on a vintage, beige-gold sofa adorned with an elaborate damask pattern. A bright diagonal beam of sunlight illuminates the album and part of the sofa. The visible photos include a smiling person in a blue shirt on the left page and several smaller images of silhouetted figures on what appears to be ice or snow on the right page, evoking memories.

Through My Mother's Eyes maps my own growth through the perspective of my mother, the person who has witnessed it most completely. The series pairs family photographs with objects she has kept from my childhood, tracing a life in accumulated fragments. What began as an exercise in personal nostalgia became something wider: a recognition that our parents grow alongside us, that change is as inevitable for them as it is for us, and that what we choose to keep — photographs, souvenirs, small tokens of time — is its own kind of testimony.
