Her Perfect Version

Alyssa de Brum

A blonde woman with some hair in a roller and long hair flowing smiles in a vintage-style kitchen. She wears a navy polka-dot dress, a pearl necklace, and a white apron with butterfly patterns, as she stirs a mixture in an orange bowl with a wooden spoon while simultaneously ironing a plaid shirt laid over an open cookbook on the counter. A red apple, cutting board, knife, and toaster oven are also visible on the patterned countertop with wooden cabinets and a tiled backsplash decorated with fish.

Her Perfect Version shows the idealized stereotypes of women from the 1950s to the 2000s, and how the unrealistic ideals of femininity have been glamorized, but also how these expectations leave women exhausted. Through five diptychs, I portray the constructed stereotype as well as the emotional and physical unraveling. I explore the tension between the appearance and the reality. With the staged, fashion based tableau, using styling, props, and intended lighting, the images combine editorial aesthetics with storytelling. The drastic changes in expression and atmosphere reveal the emotional and physical exhaustion of the ideals.
