Transience

Tristan Campbell

Transience is a black-and-white photographic series capturing city street scenes that subtly suggest the presence of humanity through indirect means—whether by depicting its effects, hinting at its impression, or obscuring it in a bold, monolithic manner. The series explores themes of movement within the urban landscape and the transient nature of “the moment”. It also questions the photographer’s role in documenting, preserving, and interpreting time and motion. Each image of this series is titled with the precise thousandth of a second from the artist's birth to the moment the photograph was taken. Transience facilitates a dialog between the viewer and the fleeting quality of “the moment’” using the city landscape and movement to invite the consideration of what it means to witness, and to preserve, what has already passed.
