take me back

Hailey Maurice-Cyr

A black and white, over-the-shoulder view of an older person with wavy, wind-swept hair, wearing sunglasses and a patterned blouse, looking out at a dynamic ocean with breaking waves and a large, dark island in the mid-ground under a cloudy sky.

There's an unexplainable feeling that comes with growing into adulthood. The fine line between having freedom, and wanting to revert back into a time when life was more forgiving.

Sometimes I find myself longing for those times. I miss the feeling of safety and innocence. I miss how I used to look at the world, with hope and admiration. I miss who I used to be, and everything that came along with that version of myself.

Memories of my childhood ebb and flow at random throughout my life. The feeling is comforting yet bittersweet. By overlaying archival and recent footage, the past and present become one entity to encapsulate how the memories of the past can unexpectedly creep into the present. The film acts as a homage to childhood memories, and asks the question: how do memories of childhood have an impact on us today?

About The Artist

A candid shot of a young woman with dark hair and cat-eye sunglasses, dressed in a black top and checkered shorts, leaning over a textured grey stone rooftop. Her hair is slightly windswept. In the background, under a bright blue sky, is a panoramic view of an old city, featuring a prominent grey church steeple with a cross and a rooster weather vane, flanked by historical buildings with varying architectural styles and a street visible further down. The overall impression is one of observing a historic urban landscape from a high vantage point.
