Heinz’s Cottage is a character study project that focuses on Heinz, an elderly German man and the place that he feels most connected to since moving to Canada in 1958—his cottage in Port Carling, Ontario. With creative direction from the photographer and the subject’s self-aware participation, these playful images provoke a personal interpretation of his identity. Heinz plays a major role in imagining himself as a new character, in turn creating a persona for himself that goes beyond ordinary limitations. These photographs are embellished images of the subject and convey the complex interplay between self-perception and how others see us.
